Aveyron Homes maintains 1 home for
4 women and 1 home for 4 men, who have sustained brain injuries that cause them to
need 24-hour supervision. The people who live here have all had normal
lives until the incidents. Clients may have children and other family
members, with whom they keep in close contact, with the help of our
staff.
Some of the people living in the homes
all have jobs during the day in supported work sites. They
are transported there on public transportation whenever possible
and special transportation as needed. Some work full days and some
have shortened days according to their needs. They are allowed to
earn some money and staff help them maintain their bank accounts.
Staff assist them in making purchases when necessary.
They may buy things for themselves or for their families, as
they wish. Staff do not make monetary decisions for them,
but guide their decisions as needed.
Staff assist only as necessary, and encourage
as much independence as possible. The home has full use of a minivan
to transport clients and staff around the community.
They use the community resources much the
same as any citizen of the community does. They each choose
their own doctor, dentist, where to shop. They go to movies, out
to eat, to get their hair cut or colored, etc. Trips to Mall of
America and other places around the state are very common. Each
can plan and save funds for an annual vacation and mini-trips
throughout the year. It is our goal to help our clients stay connected
with their families in any way we can. They may visit parents or other family members
as invited.
